We are living in an era where the need for sustainable development is constantly arising. “Sustainable Development” has become the most questionable topic in the world today. It has sparked many controversies about initiating development without having an adverse effect on the environment which is why it is the most relevant topic today. What exactly do we mean when we talk about sustainable development? "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
In order to ensure a better and sustainable future for all the United Nations General Assembly declared 17 sustainable development goals in 2015 which is also known as "Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development". Sustainable development does not necessarily only deal with climate change in fact it consists of economic, social and environmental pillars. Each of these three pillars is equally important and neither of them could be neglected. As the youth in today’s society it is our responsibility to transform these commitments into effective actions. Here at the Sustain India Student Community [SISC] we are striving hard to be the change makers within our communities. We look forward to establish a community where people come together to tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges. As the only student community in India it is our ambition to see young people from all social and cultural backgrounds come together and help us build the world we want to live in by helping each other fulfill these goals and addressing issues that are of particular concern to young people.
Through the quarterly series of two-day conventions we at SISC would be engaging with the youth of our society and encourage them to contribute on the sustainable development goals within their communities. Together, fuelled by passion, vigor and creative approaches we can now resolve major issues easily as Mahatma Gandhi has rightly said, “In a gentle way, you can shake the world.”
